An unprecedented 2.1 million people used Dubai public transportation on New Year’s Eve, said the emirate’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA) on Wednesday.
The number of riders of mass transportation during the celebration of New Year’s 2020 reached 2,126,417, showing an increase of 3.6% of the total number of commuters for the same period last year.

A total of 907,411 riders used Dubai metro – Red and Green lines, while the tram transported 37,150 riders. The number of public bus riders on this eve reached 440,521. As for taxis, they transited 689,212 riders and all the marine transport modes transported 52,123 commuters.
Thousands of people descended in the popular celebration spots of Dubai, including the iconic Burj Khalifa, to ring in new year 2020. The emirate celebrated the New Year in style, with show-stopping firework shows and thousands of events and activities across the city.

Authorities had requested the general public to use public transit on New Year eve. Over 1.6 million people were expected to watch the fireworks in Dubai across 25 locations.
On the last day of 2019, Mohammed Obaid Al Mulla, Board Member and Chairman of Customers Council, RTA, said that the public bus services are the backbone of mass transport in the city and intercity services and for connecting with neighbouring countries.
