Top Japanese electricity generator JERA, along with trading houses Mitsui & Co and Itochu Corp, are expected to sign long-term Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) contracts with a supplier in Oman, as per Reuters.
The contract will reportedly allow for the import of approximately 2mn tonnes of LNG annually from Oman for a period of 10 years, starting in 2025.
This, as per the source, will provide Japan with greater energy security, as the global LNG supply has been limited due to tensions with Russia and sanctions on Russian energy.
JERA, Japan’s largest LNG importer, confirmed that it will be signing the basic agreement with the Omani company. More information is expected to be published soon.
Reuters stated that the Japanese industry Minister, Yasutoshi Nishimura, will reportedly attend the signing ceremony. Japan imported 1.9 million tonnes of LNG from Oman in 2021, representing a significant 2.6 per cent of its total LNG imports.
